This project aims to perform linkages between data collected from the Ontario Cancer Symptom Management Collaborative (OCSMC), which collects the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) and Palliative Performance Status on patients visiting cancer centers in Ontario, and the OCR and administrative data to create an unparalleled cancer outcomes database. As such, it presents an opportunity to evaluate the impact of formal symptom assessment in the course of routine clinical care.

For example, symptom assessment might be used to predict impending resource utilization such as ER visits, potentially leading to intervention studies to try to decrease ER use. Initial methodological work is underway. Future linkages may include supplementing this resource with the Health Outcomes for Better Information and Care (HOBIC) and/or the Resident Assessment Instrument for Home Care (RAI-HC) databases. These data resources could be used to evaluate the effect of novel therapies coming out of the OICR discovery programs on patient symptoms.
