Science is more than just data and analysis. There’s a story behind every scan, every slide and every line of code. It starts with a person.
In cancer research, it’s the story of a patient with a family, friends and hopes for the future, and the story of a researcher dedicated to making the world a healthier, more beautiful place.

To spotlight the complexity and humanity of research data, OICR is hosting Interconnections, a unique art competition of images generated as part of cancer research projects.
Cancer researchers across Ontario are invited to submit an image generated through their work that reflects the complexities of cancer research and honours the patient journey.
Up to ten finalists will be selected to have their images displayed at a special OICR event on December 11 in Toronto.
The winner will be recognized and invited to discuss their submission at the December 11 event (travel and accommodation covered, for one individual, in line with OICR policy) and will receive a single framed copy of their piece.
A panel of judges will evaluate the images based on aesthetics, originality, how well they represent the underlying research, and their ability to honour the patients whose experiences inspired the competition.
Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to share your research and make it more widely accessible through the universal language of art.
Eligibility
The competition is open to any individual or group doing cancer research in Ontario. Images can come from any scientific field (e.g. pathology, radiology, bioinformatics, etc.), as long as they were generated as part of the cancer research process.
A panel of judges will evaluate the images, based on aesthetics, originality, and how well they represent the underlying research.
Images from research about the arts are not eligible. Neither are drawings or AI-generated images.
